Update from Natural Lands:
I’m reaching out to advise that, unfortunately, we’ll need to postpone your group’s volunteer tree planting event (originally scheduled October 5) until next spring. The persistent drought in our region has turned the soil into concrete-like conditions. Staff are unable to dig holes for planting trees in the target location – shovels just bounce off the surface and even a power-augur cannot drill into hard-baked ground. We would need to purchase and stage trees in the next few days for your large-scale effort, and we are not comfortable with this investment. Even if it miraculously rained for multiple days next week, the drought conditions do not provide a good start for young trees. I’m sad that nature has conspired against us, but hope that AKA can collaborate with Natural Lands on an early-spring tree planting next March or April 2025.
